Trio Pétillant
- Director : none
- Year ensemble formed : ?
- Description : The trio arranges its concert programs by themes:
- The current program is "The Madness of Spain - music during the War
of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714)". When Carlos II (ruler of
Spain, the Southern Netherlands, and Italy) died heirless in 1700, he left his
entire empire to Philip of Anjou, grandson of Louis XIV. This sudden
concentration of power in the hands of the Bourbon-dynasty disrupted the power
balance in Europe and thus provoked war with England, the Dutch Republic, the
Holy Roman Empire, Portugal, and Italy (1701). In spite of its initial
victories, France was eventually forced to give up the Southern Netherlands,
Savoy, and Austria. The peace was signed in Utrecht (1713) and Rastatt/Baden
(1714). Three hundred years later, Trio Petillant starts to look for music
that was composed during this "Spanish Succession War" in the countries that
were involved in it. In the program, "The Madness of Spain", the trio
not only performs music by composers that worked in their own land (such as
Dornel, Boehm, and J.S. Bach), but also explores different musical
connections. The Frenchman Dieupart, for example, composed in hostile
territory (England) during the war. In the same period, in France (Marais) and
Italy (Corelli), a Portuguese/Spanish melody is being adopted, appropriately
entitled: "Les Folies d'Espagne..."
- "Klinkende Munt", the program for the coming year (2002),
contains music that may very well have sounded in a typical well-to-do
Amsterdam merchant's home in the 17th century. The name is an old Dutch
expression for "hard cash", which cannot be readily translated into English,
but would literally be: "resounding coin". Sea and trade almost immediately
come to mind when thinking about 17th-century Amsterdam and Venice. Even
though the economical power of Venice was waning whereas that of Amsterdam was
on the rise (the famous United East-Indian Company, or V.O.C. was founded
there in 1602), both cities in those days are magnificent centers of sea
trade, craftmanship, science, art, and culture. The musical life, however,
differed markedly in the two cities. Venice boasted its rich and professional
music culture, first centered around the famous St. Mark's church (where
Claudio Monteverdi was appointed in the early 17th-century), later diffusing
into the different opera houses. In Calvinist Amsterdam, music making was a
favorite pastime for well-to-do amateurs, that made music primarily in their
domestic environment, also within the renowned "Muiderkring". Music was (and
is) trade as well, of course. Around 1600, Venice is the unchallenged centre
of commercial publishing (the well-known editions of Gardane, Scotto, and
Vincenti), whereas people like Paulus Matthysz are responsible for the
importance of 17th-century Amsterdam in this respect. For the program "Klinkende
Munt", Trio Pétillant selected 17th century Amsterdam and Venetian music
editions and chose compositions by Frescobaldi, Selma, Herwich, Padbrue,
Schenk, and others.
