- Description :
- In 1997 the London Classical Players was absorbed into the
OAE and Sir Roger Norrington joined the roster of conductors. The OAE is an
Associate of London's Royal Festival Hall.
- "The OAE uses the type of instruments which were current when the works
performed were written. The orchestra for which Handel composed played at a pitch of
approximately A=415 (around a half-step lower than today's accepted pitch of A=440-446),
had stringed instruments with low-tension gut strings and convex bows (light and supple
for clear phrasing) and wind instruments of a rounder and softer timbre than their
present-day equivalents. In addition, the orchestras of the day commonly included the
continuo instruments harpsichord and archlute, or theorbe (already archaic in Handel's
time, but which he continued to employ in his own performances).
"Mozart's instrumentalists, however, had slightly more developed instruments. The
wind instruments had more keys, which permitted greater facility in playing, and the
timbre was changed along the way, allowing greater projection. The pitch was higher at
A=430, which gave a brighter sound to the strings. Again, however this sound was quite
distinct from that of modern counterparts." (excerpt from CD booklet of Endless
Pleasure - Handel & Mozart Arias with Ruth Ann Swenson, soprano)

The Orchestra of the Sixteen
Orchestra "Van Wassenaer"
- Artistic director : Makoto Akatsu (violin)
- Year ensemble formed : 1990 in Den Haag (The Hague) -- by Akatsu
- Description :
- The ensemble is named after the Dutch composer and statesman Unico Wilhelm van Wassenaer
(1692-1766). Only recently it has become clear that several of the compositions used by I.
Stravinsky for his Pulcinella which were believed to be by Pergolesi, are actually
composed by Van Wassenaer.
- The director, Makoto Akatsu, has gathered players that have studied historical
performance practice at The Royal Conservatorium in The Hague, and have been particularly
influenced by the style of Sigiswald Kuijken. This common musical background gives the
group a strong unified sense of style.
- Ensemble's artistic misson: The orchestra is a reconstruction of an 18th-century string
ensemble, playing on copies of instruments and recreating music that would have been
played during his time. Exploring baroque repertoire has been the groups aim, with
particular interest in the Concerti Armonici of Van Wassenaer.
- Surprisingly the group has found that van Wassenaer's instrumentation of two violoncelli
in his Concerti Armonici is often suffcient without adding a double bass. This can give
the group its characteristic rich and yet light bass sound.
