New Orleans Musica da Camera
- Co-directors : Milton G. Scheuermann, Jr. and Thais St. Julien
- Year ensemble formed : 1966 -- by co-director Milton G. Scheuermann, Jr.
- Description : Perform with modern copies of historic instruments, primarily
medieval and early Rennaissance music. In the 31 years since its founding by co-director
Milton G. Scheuermann, Jr., the New Orleans Musica da Camera has changed dramatically.
Originally a small ensemble of amateurs who shared an interest in performing Baroque
music, the ensemble has developed into an organization of professional specialists in the
research and performance of the music of the medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods.
Modern transcriptions of original manuscripts, reconstruction of original instruments,
investigation of performance practice of earlier times, training musicians, offering
educational opportunities to the general public, weekly radio programs of early music over
WWNO-FM New Orleans and KTLN-FM Thibodaux; all of these additional activities have become
part of the life of the early music organization in the past three decades. The one thing
that has remained constant is their view of New Orleans as the most perfect place in the
U.S. for the performance of early music, and New Orleans audiences as deserving the best
performances possible.

- Description : Named after Lully's 17th-century French orchestra at the court of
Louis XIV. In the Summer of 1995, The Grande Bande re-enacted the premiere of Handel's Musick
for the Royal Fireworks at Washington, DC's, Wolf Trap. The orchestra played outdoors
with fireworks exactly duplicating those listed by King George II's ordnance master for
use at the premiere. Indeed, they were ignited by the same company that did the original
display and launched from a true-to-life replica of the huge temple the king had ordered
built especially for that occasion.
