Malle Symen Quartet
- Director : none
- Year ensemble formed : 1994
- Description : "Malle Symen" is a well-known tune from the 17th century.
Quite a few composers (e.g. Sweelinck) used this tune as a base for their compositions. It
is possible, that "Malle Symen" was also used as a term for a foolish character
from the theater. "Malle" means 'crazy' while "Symen" is a version of
the name 'Simon'.
This is a recorder quartet from The Netherlands, raised in the tradition of Frans
Brüggen, Walter van Hauwe, and the Loeki Stardust Quartet. The Malle Symen Quartet
performs early music and combines early and contemporary music in a renewing and
theatrical way.

Mille Feuilles
- Director : none
- Year ensemble formed : 2005 -- by Monika Baer, Sergio Ciomei and
Karen Walthinsen
- Description : Mille Feuilles performs music on period instruments
spanning the early 17th-century to Bach. The ensemble was formed during a
particularly boring free day in Urbana, Illinois, while on tour with Cecilia
Bartoli. This was the beginning of our love of wading through pages and
pages of music in libraries and reading through them in the rehearsal room.
Thus the name Mille Feuilles (literally, thousand leaves and also the name
of a well-loved French pastry). We hope to bring old music to a new audience
by presenting performances through with a unique historical perspective and
continuity.

La Monica
- Director : none
- Year ensemble formed : 1999
- Description : A sextet devoted to Italian and Italian-influenced
repertoire of the 17th and early 18th Centuries.
La Monica
is named after a popular folk tune that circulated throughout Europe in
various guises during the Renaissance and Baroque. The earliest versions
from Italy recount the tale of a reluctant nun-to-be protesting her fate.
The ‘Monica’ tune was often associated with the allemande
dance, including William Byrd’s “The Queen’s Almaine.” As with many popular
tunes, the Aria della monaca was transformed into a German hymn
during the Lutheran Reformation and with no apparent sense of irony, it
became the setting for the assertion of faith Von Gott will ich nicht
lassen (from God I shall not stray). In France it found its way into the
Christmas noël repertoire under the name Une jeune fillete,
inspired perhaps by the old subject of the young girl. From France, La
monica made it all the way to the New World where it can still be found
as the “Huron Carol.”

used modern instruments: Purcell's Come ye Sons of Art Away; Funeral Music
for Queen Mary, and Handel's Israel in Egypt; The Ways of Zion do Mourn,
as well as Dixit Dominus. The Monteverdi Orchestra and the guitarist, Julian
Bream, made a small number of recordings for RCA Victor Gold Seal as well.
