| Puis que de vous departir me convient Par fortune, qui par grant aramie A tout hure de moy grever souvient (Adieu vous di - anon. Utrecht 6e 37II) |
Therefore I cannot but leave you, because of Fortune, who is my greatest enemy and the source of my continuous suffering |
In medieval iconography Fortune is depicted as a noble lady, holding her wheel of fortune. Tiny humans cling on to it, trying to get to the top of the wheel. But Fortune determines their fate, simply by turning her wheel, and she hardly ever smiles upon them - no man, rich or poor, young or old, can escape her: anybody who tries to challenge, charm, avoid, or fight her in a miserable attempt to turn his luck, will be broken on her wheel.
