A
NOTE ON GUSTAV LEONHARDT'S RECORDINGS:
Sony Classical provides a
Leonhardt website (biography & discography). He has also made several recordings for
the Virgin Classics Veritas, Deutsche Harmonia Mundi, and Philips Digital Classics
labels.)
If you would like to take an
auditory tour of authentic instruments from the baroque, I can strongly recommend to you
the 3 CD set, "Guide des instruments baroques" featuring the Ricercar
Consort on the Ricercar label (RIC 93001). A 149-page booklet accompanies the recording
set and includes descriptions and pictures of the various instruments. Sixty-three
different baroque instruments are featured. Here, for example, is your chance to hear and
read the difference between the oboe, oboe d'amore, and oboe da caccia. How about the
chalumeau, hurdy-gurdy, or baryton? This is the "Young Person's Guide to the
Orchestra" for the 17th and 18th centuries!
Ricercar released a prequel to RIC 93001, titled "Guide des instruments de la renaissance" (RIC 95001) featuring the Ricercar Consort, La Fenice, Antwerps Blokfluit Consort, le Tourdion, Romanesque, Ensemble Gilles Rapin, Les flūtes d'Alleman, and various soloists. A 201-page booklet is included.
