Oratorio after Handel' (published by Tectum Verlag, Marburg, 2002), Israel in
Babylon was compiled in 1764 by Edward Toms (who later worked with Samuel
Arnold, the early editor of Handel's works). It was performed twice at the
King's Theatre, London, and in 1770 the Public Advertiser printed an article
which reminisced that, "This was looked upon as a wild chimerical Idea, laughed
at, and pronounced to be impracticable: However, ... The Professors to whom
they were shewn were surprised and convinced ... it is esteemed the best
Compilation that has been made from the Works of that great Master."
